Backstory:

Ciel, or Aspen at the time, wasn't born, they were created. They come from the time when the world was still unsundered, and were a beloved familiar of Pamphilos, Azem at the time, created with the help of Venat. Their original purpose was to survey and collect flora, keep creations calm, essentially assist Azem when researching nature in unfamiliar corners of the world. Some would say they were a soulless familiar like any other, but both Pamphilos and Venat adored them. It may not have been on purpose at the time, but their sole presence brought joy to those around them. And then something inexplicable happened. A different Aspen appeared in Elpis, one with a soul, a mission, and the name - Ciel. As much of a surprise as it was, Venat trusted this new familiar. She knew that, no matter how much they have changed, her beloved Aspen would never, never not wish for the best for the world and its people. And as unbelievable as their story was, she believed, and their actions revealed to her the nature of the calamity that would soon fall upon the world. After Ciel has departed from Elpis, Venat shared her findings with Pamphilos. Together, with the knowledge they got Hermes to share, they made certain modifications to Aspen. Instilling within them the overflowing love for mankind they carried in their hearts, they made them into a proper entelchy. There was no guarantee their plan would succeed, but Pamphilos was certain. Having so much hope and love in their heart, and sharing them with their beloved creation, how could it not?The Final Days were drawing near and there was only one thing left for them to do. To attempt something no one has ever done before, and send their familiar forward in time. With teary eyes they bid them farewell. "Though the world be sundered and our souls set adrift, where you walk, my dearest friend, fate shall surely follow."The feat, although it succeeded, was an incredible strain on the familiar's aether. They awoke weak, bereft of memories and the abilities they once possesed, in the middle of an unfamiliar forest. Lost and confused, they wandered the woods until they were found by an elezen white mage who was kind enough to take them in. Mirthari, the elezen, lived alone deep in the Twelveswood and styled himself a druid, keeping peace with the elementals. He assumed the poor creature he found was a lost viera child and although they were hardly capable of speech and knew nothing about the world, he took it onto himself to raise and teach them. He gave them a name - Ciel - to reflect how they would gaze up at the sky so often, as if they expected to see or recall something, a secret of their past, hidden between the clouds.Ciel was drawn to Mirthari. From the first they felt a warm sense of trust towards him and even though they did not understand it, they loved him unconditionally. Same was true for Mirthari, who found himself caring for this little creature with all his being. Neither of them knew it of course, but the bond that Pamphilos and Aspen once shared endured, and connected them even then.Years passed, Ciel learned, and although they still had a long way to go, they started to get a grasp of how the world works. Mirthari shared what he could about conjury and even brought Ciel to Gridania a couple times. Scared as they were to find themself in a new place with a lot of people, they were curious and excited to explore. And so time passed. And then calamity struck.
The Seventh Umbral Calamity did not spare their little corner of the woods. Mirthari was called to Gridania to assit with healing, Ciel followed suit. The pain and suffering they witnessed felt like more than their little heart could handle, but they could not bear to stay behind. They watched as Mirthari spared no effort to heal those he could. They watched as the woods grew ill. They watched as their caretaker exhausted himself to the point of breaking and fell gravely sick. And they could do nothing but cry at their bedside when the illness took him.
In his last moments Mirthari had one regret, and that regret was leaving Ciel alone. With his whole heart he wished to stay with them. And though neither of them had any idea, his wish came true. Something changed in Ciel after Mirthari passed. Once the worst of the grief has passed they felt changed. Although the cold sorrow hung heavy in the air around them, there was a warm glow somewhere deep inside them. They didn't know this of course, but Mirthari's - Azem's - soul lived on, in them, and it granted them a sliver of their abilities and experienece.Ciel still felt extremely lost though. They spent a few more years living alone in their little corner of the woods before they decided to venture any further. They were scared to leave the only life they knew behind them, but decided they have to move on. They have been to Gridania a couple times already and were familiar with the general concept of Adventurers' Guild. So, what harm would there be in trying to join?

Personality and development through expansions:

ARR
Being thrown into the wide, unfamiliar world terrified them. Ciel used to be terrified of almost everything. They were naive, scared, eager to please, easily manipulated and the list goes on. Certainly not the Warrior of Light people suddenly expected them to be. They were extremely against violence and it pained them when they couldn't avoid combat or at least resolve it without ending someone else's life. It still does, to be honest. But it used to be worse and they would break down crying a lot after the adrenaline of battle passed.
They wanted to run away many, many times, but they couldn't. What would happen to the people who depended on them if they just disappeared? They couldn't abandon them. As terrified as they were their concern for others was stronger.HW
After the bloody banquet they were terrified and couldn't shake the feeling that it was all because of them. The people who were the closest to them were gone, they were in a cold land they didn't know and didn't feel welcome in, they were scared and felt hopeless. It did get a little better when they really got to know de Fortemps family, Aymeric and Haurchefant. Ysayle too. They made them feel welcome. Ciel warmed up to them all and was determined to protect them. They even picked up the sword and shield when it was needed. They were still naive and scared, but they were more willing to take action.
And then everything shattered once again.
After the events at the Vault they once again felt weak of heart. After the events at Azys Lla they felt broken. To lose both Haurchefant and Ysayle in such a short span of time was more than their little heart could take. For the first time they were angry, so angry in fact that in that moment they felt violent. They stormed Azys Lla on autopilot, feeling like none of that was real, and when they got to Thordan, for the first time in their life, they killed without remorse.
They felt terrible about it after the fact of course. They would break down crying a lot after these events and cry about everything. About loss of friends, about losing themself, about Estinien's damn dragon possession. Somehow it was all their fault. They didn't even remember much from what happened there. They just felt broken. The peace conference at Falcon's Nest didn't help. They were a shaking mess since. Even when the Dragonsong war ended, Nidhogg was defeated and Ishgard slowly started to mend, they still felt that they did not deserve to be there to see it.SB - tbaSHB - tbaEW - tba

Backstory:

Y'hvid's mother never told him much of her origin. All he knew is that she lived in Dravania for most of her life, hunting, and when she decided to settle down, while most other communities shunned her, the Y tribe of New Sharlayan took her in. She wasn't a fan of the miqo'te way of living, but claimed it was better than fighting for her life everyday as a hunter. The miqo'te tried to make her feel like a part of the tribe, but she has ever remained an outcast in the community. Though it was more because of her unsavory character more than anything else.
Eventually, like most other adult females of the tribe, she had a child with the Nhun. That's little Y'hvid. The child, of course, turned out to be the mother's race. Meaning little Y'hvid was actually not that little and towered over other kids.
His being different didn't help with socializing. When he tried to play with them, unaware of how much stronger then them he was, he would accidently hurt them or break toys. And eventually, he stopped being invited to play. The kids started to pick on him, saying he's no fun and that he doesn't know how to play. For the first 5 or so years of his life he was constantly reminded that he's different and too much of an animal to be around others. And it stuck with him. When the Dravanian colony was abandoned and the Y tribe left, Y'hvid and his mother stayed behind. While he was still a child Dravanian hunters would take pity on them, but as he grew and his mother became even more cranky, they started to once again distance themselves from the hrothgars. The pair moved further into Coerthas, built a shack somewhere in the wilderness, and stayed there for years. His mother wasn't the best company, so teen Y'hvid soon took to exploring by himself.tba

ARR
Having started his adventurer's career in La Noscea the first Scion Y'hvid ran into was a bit of a surprise. He wasn't too keen of meeting any of his old family, having ever been an outcast, so he was very anxious around Y'shtola since he met her. When she invited him to the Waking Sands it didn't feel friendly, and when he was introduced to the Scions he didn't feel welcome. He was fidgeting anxiously the whole time, uncomfortable with so many eyes on him. It didn't help that those eyes belonged to people who wanted him to fight for their cause. He didn't feel like he was being invited to join them. He felt like a tool that they're looking over before using it to crush their enemies and he hated that.
As time went by not much changed. He never saw these people as friends and was especially wary around Y'shtola, convinced that she disliked him, just like all other members of the Y tribe he remembered did. It didn't even cross his mind that it may not be true. He was a tool to them. They didn't like him as a person. No one did. He was just a big and strong beast that could be used. Or so he convinced himself, and it made him utterly miserable.tbaHW
